چکیده

This special issue of Computing and Visualization in Science contains selected papers from the 2014 European Multigrid conference (EMG 2014), which took place in Leuven, Belgium, from 9 to 12 September, 2014. European Multigrid (EMG) is a series of conferences on the theme of multigrid methods and related fields. EMG is one of the most important conference series on this topic worldwide. Previous EMG meetings have been held in Cologne (1981 and 1985), Bonn (1990), Amsterdam (1993), Stuttgart (1996), Gent (1999), Hohenwart (2002), Scheveningen (2005), Bad Herrenhalb (2008), Ischia (2010) and Schwetzingen (2012). The EMG 2014 conference took place at the Irish College, in Leuven, an old university college founded in 1607. It attracted more than 80 participants of 15 countries, of which 20 were PhD-students; 12 participants attended the conference from outside Europe. Further details are available on the conference homepage

Special issue in computing and visualization in science (CVS), related to the European multigrid conference, EMG 2010

With great pleasure we present the special issue in CVS related to the European Multigrid conference, which took place on the island Isola d’Ischia in Italy from 19 to 23 September, 2010. The conference was organized by Alfio Borzi (at that time at the Università degli Studi del Sannio, in Benevento, Italy, now at the University of Würzburg, Germany), and Cornelis Oosterlee, from the CWI—Center...

Convergence analysis of multigrid methods with collective point smoothers for optimal control problems

In this paper we consider multigrid methods for solving saddle point problems. The choice of an appropriate smoothing strategy is a key issue in this case. Here we focus on the widely used class of collective point smoothers. These methods are constructed by a point-wise grouping of the unknowns leading to, e.g., collective Richardson, Jacobi or Gauss-Seidel relaxation methods. Their smoothing ...

On Monotone Multigrid Methods for the Signorini Problem

SUMMARY Using well{known concepts from the scalar case (cf. Kor94]) we derive globally convergent multigrid methods for the discretized Signorini problem in linear elasticity. Special care has to be taken in case of varying normal directions. The algorithm can be implemented as a multigrid V{cycle with optimal complexity. In numerical experiments we observed similar convergence rates as for lin...

Multigrid Methods for Obstacle Problems

Obstacle problems can be posed as elliptic variational inequalities, complementarity inequalities and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) partial differential equations (PDEs). In this paper, we propose a multigrid algorithm based on the full approximate scheme (FAS) for solving the membrane constrained obstacle problems and the minimal surface obstacle problems in the formulations of HJB equations. ...

On Dgs Relaxation: the Stokes Problem

Multigrid methods have proven to be eecient methods for solving partial diier-ential equations (especially those of elliptic type). There is also growing experience with multigrid solvers for uids problems, e.g., the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations (using both nite element and nite diierence discretizations). It is also well known that at the heart of any multigrid method is the smoother. In...
